X’s Grokipedia is Online After It Briefly Crashed Out
Grokipedia, the encyclopedia powered by xAI’s assistant Grok, made its debut online on Monday but faced a swift crash shortly after launching. As of the latest update, the website is operational and boasts over 885,000 articles, according to a counter on its homepage.
Elon Musk, known for his criticisms of Wikipedia, has referred to Grokipedia as a “necessary step towards xAI’s goal of understanding the Universe.” His remarks echo ongoing allegations from Musk and his supporters claiming Wikipedia is biased. In response, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales labeled Musk’s assertions as “factually incorrect.”
Musk stated last week that the launch of Grokipedia was delayed to eliminate “propaganda.” While some articles on Grokipedia closely mirror those on Wikipedia, they notably lack in-line citations formatted the same way. However, they do feature a disclaimer indicating the content is adapted from Wikipedia and is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 License.
Early users on social media have pointed out instances where Musk’s perspective is more pronounced in the “AI-powered encyclopedia.” For instance, excerpts from Grokipedia’s entry on “university” exhibit this influence, as noted by Bluesky user Jeremy Cohen.
Similarly, a screenshot of the Grokipedia entry for Musk, shared by another user, brings attention to how the site reflects Musk’s views. As the world watches this ambitious project unfold, it remains to be seen how Grokipedia will challenge other encyclopedic platforms and how user feedback will shape its future.
