Apple Says the App Store is ‘Fair and Free of Bias’ in Response to Musk’s Legal Threats

Apple has firmly rejected Elon Musk’s allegations that the company is favoring OpenAI in its App Store rankings, claiming it creates an unfair environment for other AI developers. In a statement to Bloomberg, Apple emphasized that the App Store is “designed to be fair and free of bias,” boasting thousands of apps presented through charts, algorithmic recommendations, and expert-curated lists using objective criteria. They assert, “Our goal is to offer safe discovery for users and valuable opportunities for developers.”

In a recent post on X, Musk accused Apple of “unequivocal antitrust violation,” alleging that the tech giant prioritizes OpenAI, which inhibits competition. He warned that his company, xAI, would pursue immediate legal action unless Apple improved its app rankings. Musk also questioned why his apps, X and Grok, were excluded from the ‘Must Have’ section, asserting their prominence—X as the “number one news app in the world” and Grok ranked fifth overall.

Interestingly, Musk offered no substantial evidence to support his claims. Notably, other AI applications, such as the Chinese AI app DeepSeek, have topped Apple’s free app rankings, even surpassing ChatGPT. Furthermore, as noted by X’s Community Notes, the app Perplexity topped the overall rankings in India’s App Store just months after Apple’s partnership announcement with OpenAI.

In response to Musk’s accusations, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman remarked that Musk’s claims were “remarkable” given previous allegations of his manipulative practices on X for personal gain. In a scathing retort, Musk dismissed Altman’s comments, stating, “Scam Altman lies as easily as he breathes.”

This ongoing conflict raises significant questions about competition and fairness in the app marketplace. As the conversation unfolds, public interest is piqued. What are your thoughts on Apple’s App Store policies? Share your views below!
