X Users Have Until November 10 to Re-Enroll Their Security Keys
X, formerly known as Twitter, has issued a critical reminder to users regarding the re-enrollment of their security keys for two-factor authentication (2FA). If you rely on a hardware security key, such as YubiKey, for your account security, you must complete this process by November 10 to maintain access to your account.
The announcement was made via the official X Safety account, emphasizing the importance of this deadline. As part of ongoing updates and security enhancements, X plans to retire the twitter.com domain, which is still linked to hardware keys. Users are advised: “By November 10, we’re asking all accounts that use a security key as their 2FA method to re-enroll their key to continue accessing X.”
It is crucial for users to understand that if they opt to enroll a new security key, any previously registered keys will cease to function unless they are also re-enrolled. However, it’s important to note that this change specifically affects YubiKeys and passkeys, while 2FA authenticator apps like Microsoft Authenticator or Authy will remain unaffected.
Failure to re-enroll by the deadline will result in account lockouts. Users will need to either complete the re-enrollment, select a different 2FA option, or stop using 2FA altogether, which X recommends against for security reasons.
To re-enroll or add a new hardware key, navigate to the Settings in the X app, then go to “Security and account access” followed by “Manage Passkeys.”
As X continues to evolve under Elon Musk’s leadership, established features are being updated to enhance user security. Make sure to act swiftly and ensure your account remains secure by re-enrolling your security keys before the November 10 deadline. Don’t forget to share your thoughts on this change in the comments!
