Perplexity Signs Deal to Use Getty Images

Perplexity AI has recently announced a significant multi-year licensing partnership with Getty Images, enhancing its AI search and discovery tools by integrating access to Getty’s vast library of images. This partnership highlights a growing trend towards responsible use of visual content, ensuring proper attribution as a cornerstone of their agreement.

As generative AI tools gain popularity, copyright concerns and attribution requirements have escalated. Perplexity, particularly, has faced legal challenges over copyright issues in the past. Notably, the company was sued by Japanese media giants Nikkei and Asahi Shimbun in August for allegedly using their content without permission. Furthermore, it recently faced a lawsuit from Reddit for misusing scraped data and has even been challenged by a dictionary regarding its interpretation of copyright.

Getty Images has navigated similar challenges as it encountered legal complexities surrounding AI-generated content. The company previously banned AI art submissions on its platform to address these concerns. Getty also took legal action against Stable Diffusion for allegedly infringing upon its image database by processing protected works without consent.

In light of this new collaboration, Nick Unsworth, Getty Images’ Vice President of Strategic Development, stated that “partnerships such as this support AI platforms to increase the quality and accuracy of information delivered to consumers, ultimately building a more engaging and reliable experience.” By utilizing Getty’s API, Perplexity not only enhances its offerings but also prioritizes legality in its use of imagery.

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, these partnerships set a precedent for how AI companies can responsibly utilize licensed content. What are your thoughts on this collaboration? Share your views in the comments below!
