X Experiments with Showing More Information About Profiles to Fight Inauthentic Engagement
In an effort to combat the pervasive issue of inauthentic engagement, X is launching an intriguing experiment aimed at enhancing user insights about accounts on the platform. With fake accounts, bots, and scams becoming more prevalent, especially after the rise of paid verification, this new feature could empower users to identify suspicious accounts more easily.
The platform is testing an “about this account” feature that will unveil critical information, including when an account was created, its geographical location, the number of times the username has changed, and its connection to X. This functionality draws parallels to Facebook’s “page transparency,” which provides similar insights into page authenticity.
“When you read content on X, you should be able to verify its authenticity,” stated Nikita Bier, X’s head of product. This initiative is especially timely as users navigate the complexities of online information, making it essential to discern fact from fiction.
If the feature is widely adopted, it may significantly decrease exposure to scams and deceptive tactics. Scammers often alter account handles to mislead followers, and revealing an account’s location may help users uncover individuals who are misrepresenting their identities.
However, the complete rollout of this functionality may take time. Initially, X will demonstrate this feature on a select few profiles of team members, many of whom already carry an official “X” badge. This trial period will allow X to gather user feedback and refine the tool.
As X dives into this new territory of transparency, users are encouraged to stay aware of these developments. What are your thoughts on this initiative? Share your comments below!
