DirecTV Will Start Replacing Screensavers with AI-Generated Ads Next Year

DirecTV is stepping into the future by replacing traditional screensavers with AI-generated advertisements next year. The innovative plan comes from a new partnership with Glance, an AI company backed by Google. Glance has developed an on-device AI tool that will enhance the user experience for DirecTV Gemini device owners starting early next year.

The partnership aims to transform how viewers engage with advertising on their televisions. Glance’s press release suggests that customers will be able to shop for products and brands through an immersive, AI-led experience. By using the Glance mobile app, viewers can insert themselves or others into AI-generated videos displayed on their screens. In a compelling twist, they can even alter wardrobe options and make purchases directly related to the AI-generated images from their smartphones.

Rajat Wanchoo, Glance’s group vice president of commercial partnerships, stated, “We are making television a lean-in experience versus lean back.” By integrating generative AI, users will be encouraged to create their own unique “ChatGPT moment” on their televisions.

However, public interest in such features remains questionable. While the technology aims to enhance user engagement, many may wonder if this transition is truly necessary. Notably, the press release does not clarify whether viewers can opt out of these new screensavers once they are implemented.

As DirecTV continues to innovate, only time will tell how well customers embrace this AI advertising revolution. Will this new experience redefine how we interact with television? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
