Meta Removes Facebook Group for Tracking ICE Agents After DOJ Pressure

In a significant move, Meta has removed a Facebook group that was allegedly tracking U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Chicago, following pressure from the Department of Justice (DOJ). Attorney General Pam Bondi posted on X, stating that the DOJ contacted Facebook to dismantle the group, which she claimed was being used to “dox and target” ICE personnel.

A Meta spokesperson confirmed the group’s removal, citing violations of the platform’s policies against coordinated harm but did not disclose the group’s specific name or acknowledge the DOJ’s involvement in the action.

Reports indicate that ICE officers have been operating in Chicago with facial coverings and without name tags, frequently using vehicles devoid of license plates. A recent ruling by a U.S. District Judge mandated that all non-undercover ICE agents must visibly display identification when active in the Chicagoland area.

The DOJ’s demands extend beyond Facebook, as other tech companies have faced similar pressures to remove content that critiques the administration’s immigration policies. Earlier this month, Apple removed the ICEBlock app, designed to track the movements of immigration agents, after similar pressure from Bondi. Developer Joshua Aaron criticized the move, stating that “capitulating to an authoritarian regime is never the right move.”

As public opinions on immigration policies and practices continue to intensify, the removal of the Facebook group and other related content raises questions about free speech and the role of technology in monitoring government actions.
