X is finally rolling out Chat, its DM replacement with encryption and video calling

In a significant move for user privacy and enhanced communication, X has officially launched its long-awaited chat platform, replacing its basic direct messaging (DM) feature. The new Chat functionality brings a suite of features that many users expect from modern messaging apps, including voice and video calling, file sharing, and options to edit or delete sent messages. Notably, the platform emphasizes privacy, incorporating end-to-end encryption and screenshot notifications to keep conversations secure.

The revamped Chat feature is currently rolling out on iOS and the web, with an Android version slated to be available soon. X is also working on introducing a voice memo capability, enabling users to send audio messages effortlessly.

After months of anticipation, X finally delivered the chat platform, having previously tested early versions of encryption earlier this year. Following a brief pause to address certain issues, the company assures users that its encryption now supports group messages and media, although metadata related to recipients remains unprotected.

X cautions users about potential security risks, stating that protections against man-in-the-middle attacks are not in place. This means that, under certain conditions, an encrypted conversation could be compromised without the sender or receiver’s knowledge. To address this, X plans to develop features that verify the authenticity of encrypted conversations.

As users begin to experience these new chat capabilities, their feedback is crucial. Have you tried the new Chat feature yet? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
