WhatsApp Enables Interoperability with Two Other Messengers in the EU
Meta has officially announced that WhatsApp will partner with BirdyChat and Haiket, marking the first time third-party messaging services will achieve interoperability with WhatsApp in the European Union. This exciting development comes as part of Meta’s efforts to comply with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which mandates such integrations. The company began working on enabling third-party chats in 2023, conducting small-scale tests over the past months to ensure seamless functionality between the platforms.
Users can expect a host of features that allow them to send messages, images, voice notes, videos, and files across these messaging services, whether on Android or iOS devices. To ensure security, any messaging service integrated with WhatsApp will need to uphold the same high standard of end-to-end encryption. As this new interoperability rolls out, users will receive a notification in their WhatsApp Settings tab, detailing how to opt-in to the feature should they choose to do so.
While the initial release will not include group chat capabilities with BirdyChat and Haiket, Meta plans to roll out this feature as soon as the partner apps are ready. Moreover, the company is committed to extending WhatsApp’s interoperability to even more applications, as required by the DMA. This move lays the groundwork for a more connected messaging ecosystem in the EU, enhancing user experience across digital platforms.
