VSCO Adds Its First AI-Powered Photo Editing Tool

The popular photo editing and sharing app, VSCO, has unveiled its first AI-powered tool, ‘Remove,’ marking a significant leap in mobile photography. As a longstanding player in the space alongside Instagram, VSCO has distinguished itself as a go-to app for serious photographers. It has long focused on sophisticated filters and editing tools, emulating the film styles cherished by enthusiasts.

The new ‘Remove’ tool allows users to erase unwanted elements from photos while preserving image resolution, similar to Google’s Magic Eraser. By simply highlighting the portion to remove, VSCO harnesses advanced technology, notably Black Forest Lab’s FLUX.1 Kontext model, to seamlessly fill in gaps, aiming for authentic results. With its launch, VSCO signals an ongoing commitment to integrating AI tools under its new AI Lab umbrella, which will include another upcoming feature, the Upscale tool, aimed at enhancing image resolution.

While VSCO’s move into AI editing may raise eyebrows among its photography-centric community, CEO Eric Wittman emphasizes that the intent is supportive rather than replacement. Acknowledging concerns over authenticity, Wittman asserts that VSCO’s AI tools aim to help photographers preserve quality and integrity, ensuring that edits remain non-destructive.

Today, the ‘Remove’ feature is available on iOS for users with a VSCO Pro subscription, priced at $13 per month or $60 annually. As it expands AI capabilities, VSCO is committed to assisting creators while navigating the complexities of copyright and authenticity, fostering a creative environment.

As always, photography enthusiasts are encouraged to share their thoughts and feedback on these innovations. Let us know how you feel about AI in photography!
