Ubisoft Made a Prototype Game with Voice-Controlled AI Teammates
Ubisoft has unveiled an innovative game prototype featuring voice-controlled AI teammates that recognize visual context and understand natural language. This project, titled “Teammates,” builds on Ubisoft’s partnership with Nvidia in 2024, which showcased advanced NPC interactions. Currently in closed playtesting with several hundred players, this prototype introduces a fresh dimension to gameplay experience.
In “Teammates,” players step into the role of a resistance fighter navigating through a dystopian landscape. The gameplay emphasizes strategic direction of in-game AI characters, with notable NPCs such as “Jaspar,” an AI assistant capable of adapting game settings, and “Pablo” and “Sofia,” who physically inhabit the game world and respond to the player’s commands.
One particularly exciting feature is the visual awareness of Ubisoft’s AI. For example, when instructed to “stand behind a barrel,” the AI characters can position themselves based on the player’s perspective. Although the NPCs exhibit a tendency to be verbose, Ubisoft is experimenting with options that allow players to customize their personalities.
Rémi Labory, Ubisoft’s Data & AI Director, highlighted the technology’s potential to deliver personalized gaming experiences. “Player input shapes character reactions in real time,” he noted, showcasing a significant evolution in game design.
Ubisoft’s exploration of generative AI extends beyond this prototype, having previously implemented tools like “Ghostwriter” to create in-game dialogue. As feedback from “Teammates” is gathered, there is the possibility that this technology could enhance other Ubisoft titles in the future.
As this groundbreaking project evolves, fans are left wondering how it will reshape the gaming landscape. What are your thoughts on voice-controlled AI in gaming? Share your comments below!
