Australia is Adding Twitch to Its Social Media Ban for Children

Australia is taking bold steps toward a comprehensive social media ban for children under 16, with Twitch now officially added to the growing list of restricted platforms. This unprecedented move also encompasses major social media giants like Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube. According to eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant, Twitch’s inclusion stems from its popularity as a livestream platform, which allows young users to engage with and interact around various content.

As the law prepares to go into effect next month, it mandates that platforms must take “reasonable steps” to prevent underage access, or face substantial penalties. While some users might find ways around the ban using VPNs, the legislation presents significant barriers for those under 16. Notably, Pinterest is excluded from the ban since its primary function isn’t centered on social interaction.

This proactive regulation comes at a time when concerns about minors’ experiences on social media are increasingly prevalent. In recent weeks, Denmark has announced similar measures for users under 15; however, varying legislative efforts in the United States have faced significant challenges. Amid an ongoing discussion about the potential risks of social media on mental health, especially for younger users, more countries may follow suit.
