Meta’s Threads app, which recently surpassed 400 million monthly active users, is set to enhance user interaction with a new “communities” feature. This functionality aims to create dedicated spaces for discussions around specific interests, significantly refining conversation quality on the platform.

The communities feature is seen as an evolution of Threads’ custom feeds and topic tags, designed to foster casual interactions amongst users sharing similar passions, whether that’s basketball, books, or technology. Over 100 distinct communities have already formed, including popular ones like “NBA Threads” and “Tech Threads.”

Users are beginning to experience this feature firsthand, with many already reporting active participation in these specialized spaces. Notably, influential figures within these communities will earn blue badges on their profiles, highlighting their engagement and expertise.

While community feeds closely resemble the existing topics feeds in Threads, there are critical differences in functionality. Posts within these communities are ranked to ensure that the most relevant content appears at the top, addressing past complaints about random postings. Additionally, a custom emoji will accompany likes in community feeds, adding a unique touch to interactions.

This move isn’t new in the realm of social platforms; competitors like Twitter have previously introduced similar features. However, Threads’ communities may provide a more cohesive environment. By tailoring user feeds based on their community memberships, Threads seeks to enhance content relevance and user satisfaction.
