In a dramatic turnaround, the Rabbit R1 has embarked on a journey of redemption, seeking to regain consumer trust after a rocky start. Initially stealing the spotlight at CES 2024 with its charming design and promises of smartphone-like versatility devoid of distractions, the R1’s release fell flat due to buggy software and non-functional features. Critics slammed it as a “$199 AI toy that fails at almost everything,” leading to significant backlash.
Fast forward nearly two years, and Rabbit has launched RabbitOS 2, a transformative software update aimed at enhancing the user experience. CEO Jesse Lyu is hopeful for a second chance, emphasizing substantial interface improvements. The touchscreen now operates similarly to smartphones, simplifying navigation and carrying out tasks.
Among the standout features is “Creations,” an intuitive tool that allows users to code their own apps via simple verbal commands. This innovative approach to app creation presents a unique selling point that distinguishes the R1 from typical smartphones. However, Lyu acknowledges that convincing users to ditch their phones will be challenging, especially in sectors like banking where trust in AI is paramount.
The path forward is filled with obstacles, including the growing competition from established phone manufacturers integrating AI features.
