OpenAI Now Sells Extra Sora Credits for $4, Plans to Reduce Free Gens in the Future

OpenAI has recently initiated the sale of additional credits for its popular Sora AI video generation tool. For $4, users can purchase an extra 10 video generations, expanding their creative possibilities. Currently, the platform allows up to 30 free generations each day, but this limit is expected to decrease as OpenAI moves toward monetizing the service.

Bill Peebles, head of OpenAI’s Sora division, announced this strategy via a post on X, indicating that the free generation limit would need to be adjusted to support growth. “Eventually we will need to bring the free gens down to accommodate growth (we won’t have enough GPUs to do it otherwise!), but we’ll be transparent as it happens,” Peebles stated.

Moreover, OpenAI plans to expand its monetization model by allowing entities to license their copyrighted material—including artwork, characters, and likenesses. “We imagine a world where rightsholders have the option to charge extra for cameos of beloved characters and people,” he wrote. This decision comes amidst ongoing legal challenges, including a trademark infringement lawsuit from Cameo over this very feature.

While there are risks involved—especially given the series of controversies surrounding OpenAI’s text-to-video capabilities—these changes signal a shift toward a more commercial approach. As the industry evolves, many users will be keen to see how OpenAI balances monetization with user access.
