NVIDIA to Invest Up to $100 Billion in OpenAI for 10 Gigawatts of AI Data Centers

NVIDIA has announced a monumental investment of up to $100 billion in OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, aimed at developing at least 10 gigawatts of AI data centers using NVIDIA technologies. This strategic partnership marks a significant milestone in the tech industry, as it will require millions of NVIDIA GPUs to power OpenAI’s upcoming models. The funding will be rolled out progressively as each gigawatt of computing power comes online.

The initial phase is projected to launch in the latter half of 2026, utilizing NVIDIA’s state-of-the-art Vera Rubin platform, which the company’s CEO, Jensen Huang, has touted as a substantial upgrade from existing Blackwell chips. “NVIDIA and OpenAI have significantly influenced each other over the years, from the inaugural DGX supercomputer to the creation of ChatGPT,” Huang remarked during the partnership announcement.

Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, emphasized the partnership’s potential, stating, “Compute infrastructure will be the foundation for the future economy, enabling new AI breakthroughs and empowering users and businesses at scale.” This unprecedented commitment from NVIDIA reflects its broader strategy of investing in transformative AI technologies.

NVIDIA’s recent investments also include a $5 billion stake in Intel and an expenditure of over $900 million for AI technology from startup Enfabrica. These initiatives complement OpenAI’s ongoing partnerships, including its collaboration with Oracle for a 4.5-gigawatt data center capacity project.

This multi-billion dollar investment solidifies NVIDIA’s and OpenAI’s positions as leaders in the AI landscape. As both companies continue to innovate, the world eagerly anticipates the advancements that will emerge from this monumental partnership. What are your thoughts on this investment?
