Meta Has Won the Antitrust Case That Could Have Forced It to Spin Off Instagram and WhatsApp

Meta has successfully avoided a monumental challenge that threatened its structure as a leader in social media. A federal judge ruled on Tuesday in favor of Meta, concluding that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) couldn’t substantiate its claims of the company being a monopoly. This ruling effectively dismissed the FTC’s antitrust case aimed at reversing Meta’s acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp.

The FTC’s case began in 2020, alleging that Meta, previously known as Facebook, harmed U.S. consumers by stifling competition through its acquisitions. Meta countered the claims by emphasizing its investments in these platforms, which contributed to their extraordinary growth to over a billion users. The company pointed to TikTok’s rapid rise as evidence of ongoing competition in the social media marketplace.

In his judgment, U.S. District Judge James Boasberg stated that it wasn’t enough for the FTC to prove past monopolistic power; they needed to demonstrate that Meta maintains such power today. Judge Boasberg’s decision highlighted the competitive landscape, particularly mentioning TikTok and YouTube as significant challengers in the market.

Meta’s spokesperson celebrated the ruling, asserting that the decision acknowledged the fierce competition the company faces. “Our products facilitate American innovation and growth,” the spokesperson noted.

While the FTC may consider appealing the ruling, the path forward remains uncertain. The case significantly reshapes the discourse on antitrust regulation in the technology sector.
