Snapchat’s New ‘Topic Chats’ Feature Makes It Easier to Comment Publicly on Things You’re Interested In

Snapchat has unveiled its new feature, “Topic Chats,” designed to enhance public engagement on trending subjects. While the app has traditionally focused on private interactions, the rise of its popular Spotlight feature has shown a clear demand for open dialogue among users about shared interests. With this update, Snapchat aims to tap into the growing desire for communal conversations around various topics.

The Topic Chats feature will first roll out in Canada, New Zealand, and the US. Users will find a prominent yellow button labeled “Join the Chat” in various sections of the Snapchat app, making it simple to engage in discussions. By tapping the button, users can join conversations and explore relevant Spotlight videos, enriching their experience. Popular topics like F1 and the reality show Below Deck are likely examples that users can expect.

To enhance the social experience, Snapchat will notify users when friends are active in a particular chat, while conversations will be easily accessible on the personalized Topic Chat page. To ensure a safe environment, Snapchat plans to moderate these discussions using advanced LLMs and other measures, maintaining the integrity of the conversations. Additionally, user profiles will stay private unless both parties are friends, offering an extra layer of security against unsolicited interactions.

The Topic Chats feature will officially launch in the coming weeks, appearing in Chat shortcuts and on the Stories page, as well as during Spotlight video browsing. With this innovative addition, Snapchat not only caters to user interests but also fosters a community atmosphere. Are you excited about this new way to engage in public discussions?
