Meta Rolls Out Teen Accounts for Facebook and Messenger Across the World

Meta is transitioning millions of young users on Facebook and Messenger to dedicated “teen accounts,” boasting enhanced parental controls and safety features tailored for adolescents. This global rollout comes as Meta reports that “hundreds of millions” of teens already utilize these accounts on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger.

The introduction of teen accounts initially began on Instagram last year, followed by a limited release to teens in the US, Canada, the UK, and Australia. Now, users aged 13 to 15 worldwide will be required to switch to these specialized accounts. Using advanced AI technology, Meta can identify users who may misrepresent their ages. The new accounts empower parents with tools to monitor screen time and see their children’s messaging activities. Additionally, the accounts implement stricter privacy settings, limiting interactions with unfamiliar adults to ensure a safer online environment for younger users.

In conjunction with this update, Instagram is expanding its initiative that allows US middle and high schools to expedite reports of bullying and other concerning behavior. Following positive feedback from trial schools, Meta is inviting any US-based institutions to participate in the “school partnership program.”

As Meta faces scrutiny and numerous lawsuits regarding child safety on its platforms, the company has intensified efforts to bolster parental control features and bridge gaps in safety protocols.
