Mastodon is Adding Bluesky-like Starter Packs
Mastodon, the prominent federated social network built on ActivityPub, is set to enhance user experience by introducing its own version of “Starter Packs,” inspired by Bluesky. This initiative aims to help new users navigate the sometimes overwhelming task of finding accounts to follow when joining a server, addressing a common challenge within decentralized social networks.
Mastodon gGmbH, the nonprofit developer behind Mastodon, emphasizes that the new “Packs” will incorporate user feedback, allowing individuals to opt in or out of these curated lists. Unlike Bluesky’s approach, which requires reporting or blocking to remove oneself from a Starter Pack, Mastodon will make it easier for users to ensure their preferences are respected. Users will be notified if they are added to a Pack and can choose to remove themselves seamlessly.
Additionally, Mastodon is collaborating with other development teams in the Fediverse to establish a Fediverse Enhancement Proposal (FEP), aimed at making this feature accessible to any developer using ActivityPub. This move not only speaks to the popularity of such features but also aligns with a larger trend in social media, as Meta has recently cloned Bluesky’s Starter Packs for Threads.
As Mastodon continues to evolve, this new feature promises to streamline the onboarding process for its users, making it simpler to engage with the community. With the social network landscape constantly shifting, the introduction of Packs serves as a timely enhancement, looking to boost user engagement and retention.
What are your thoughts on this new feature? Will it change how you interact on Mastodon? Share your insights in the comments!
