Instagram Makes ‘Teen Accounts’ More Restrictive

Instagram is tightening its policies around “teen accounts,” introducing new limits aimed at enhancing safety for younger users. The platform, owned by Meta, now requires older teens to gain parental approval if they wish to opt out of the default stricter privacy settings.

Originally introduced a year ago, these teen accounts featured enhanced privacy controls. The recent updates, following similar implementations for Facebook and Messenger, utilize AI technology to identify users who lie about their age, thereby shifting them to these more secure accounts.

Despite these measures, many critics argue that Instagram’s efforts to safeguard its younger audience are insufficient. A report from safety advocates at the Heat Initiative indicates that young teens are still being exposed to dangerous content and unwanted interactions at alarming rates.

The latest changes will block teens from following accounts that frequently share age-inappropriate material or appear suspicious based on their bio or username. Furthermore, Instagram aims to limit mature search terms, including words like “alcohol” and “gore,” making it harder for teens to encounter inappropriate content.

In a blog post, Meta described the revamped account settings, likening the content available to the experience of watching a PG-13 movie. However, the comparison has raised questions, as restrictions may be more stringent than what a PG-13 film might portray.

Additionally, parents eager for tighter oversight will soon have access to a “limited content” mode that filters even more unsuitable material. Instagram is also testing a reporting feature allowing parents to flag inappropriate posts for review.

These changes are rolling out gradually in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia, with Meta promising further enhancements to teen safety on all its platforms.

As Instagram evolves, it remains crucial for users and their families to stay informed about these updates. What are your thoughts on these new policies? Share your perspective in the comments below!
