Google’s AI Mode Gets Better at Understanding Visual Prompts
In a significant upgrade, Google has enhanced its AI Mode, which was launched earlier this year. This update focuses on improving how the AI handles visual prompts, making it more effective for users seeking visual information.
Users familiar with AI Mode may have noticed that it sometimes struggles with image-related queries, often producing responses laden with textual information. Robby Stein, Google’s Vice President of Product for Search, acknowledged this limitation. To address it, the company has introduced a novel “query fan-out” technique specifically for images. When users seek visuals—such as “moody but maximalist” bedrooms—the AI now performs multiple background searches, allowing it to grasp the specifics of the request more effectively.
This newly-developed feature is multimodal, enabling users to initiate conversations using an image or video. Google envisions its practical applications, particularly in the online shopping sphere. Although shopping through AI Mode was previously possible, the latest changes significantly enhance the user experience with more relevant visual responses. The AI is now better equipped to interpret nuanced queries—like “find me barrel jeans that aren’t too baggy”—ensuring users receive tailored results. After yielding initial suggestions, the AI allows for follow-up questions to further refine the search.
As with various Google updates, the rollout may take some time, so users are encouraged to be patient if they don’t see the enhanced experience immediately. This advancement not only improves interaction but promises to transform user expectations around visual searches.
