Discord Users’ IDs and Data Compromised in Customer Service Provider Hack
Discord’s third-party customer service provider has been infiltrated by an unauthorized party, leading to the compromise of users’ personal information. This incident, discovered on September 20, involved the exposure of a limited number of government IDs, such as driver’s licenses and passports, which some users provided for age verification. Importantly, Discord itself was not hacked; users are only at risk if they have been in contact with the platform’s Customer Support or Trust & Safety teams. Therefore, direct messages within the service remain secure.
Those affected by the data breach are being notified via email, including individuals who may not hold accounts but have interacted with Discord’s support teams. The compromised data may encompass real names, usernames, email addresses, and the last four digits of credit cards linked to accounts. Additionally, the email will indicate if any government ID submitted by the user has been compromised, raising the risk of identity theft.
In response to this breach, Discord acted swiftly by revoking the third-party provider’s access to its system and notifying law enforcement. The platform has also committed to frequent audits of its third-party systems to ensure compliance with Discord’s safety standards.
If you’ve ever communicated with Discord’s support teams, keep an eye on your email to stay informed about potential risks. Have you ever had concerns about online security? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
