Apple Explains How It Will Comply with App Store Age Verification Requirements in Texas

Earlier this year, Texas passed a law requiring app stores to verify the ages of their users. Now, Apple has shared details about how it plans to comply with the new age verification requirements, which are set to take effect on January 1, 2026.

According to Apple, individuals creating new Apple accounts in Texas will need to confirm they are over the age of 18. For users under 18, their accounts must be linked to a parent or guardian’s account through Apple’s Family Sharing settings. This will enable parents to approve all downloads, in-app purchases, and transactions made by their minors.

While Apple has not disclosed its specific methods for age verification, it noted that developers must adapt their applications to comply with the law. To facilitate this, Apple is developing new tools for app makers to implement parental consent and other age-restricted functionalities.

Key updates include the Declared Age Range API, which will allow developers to categorize users based on age, and new APIs that will enable the re-obtaining of parental consent when significant changes are made to an app. Parents will also have the ability to revoke consent for their minors’ app usage. More details, including technical documentation, are expected later this fall.

Despite opposing the law—CEO Tim Cook even urged Texas Governor Greg Abbott to veto it—Apple acknowledged the need for stronger online safety measures for children. However, the company emphasized concerns about privacy, citing potential risks from requiring sensitive personal information to download apps.

Texas isn’t alone in implementing age verification laws; similar laws in Utah and Louisiana are also set to take effect in 2026.

As these requirements unfold, how do you feel about age verification in app stores? Share your thoughts in the comments!
