Affinity Resurfaces as an All-in-One Illustration, Photo Editing, and Layout App

In a significant development for graphic design enthusiasts and professionals, Affinity has made a powerful comeback as an all-in-one illustration, photo editing, and layout app. Following its acquisition by Canva in 2024, the future of the Affinity suite—comprising Designer, Photo, and Publisher—appeared uncertain. However, Canva has revitalized these applications, combining them into a single program called Affinity by Canva, which notably remains free for users.

This new iteration retains its core functionality, enabling users to toggle between Vector, Pixel, and Layout tabs seamlessly. Affinity by Canva is currently available for macOS and Windows, with an iPadOS version in development. An exciting feature is the ability to mix and match tools, allowing for a more customized experience based on individual project requirements.

The integration of Canva’s AI Studio tools is particularly impressive, as it enables users to remove backgrounds and utilize Generative Fill capabilities directly within Affinity. While veteran users may have reservations about these updates, they can continue using their existing Affinity V2 software without disruption.

However, while the promise of a free app is appealing, the necessity of creating a free Canva account may raise concerns among users accustomed to a straightforward purchase model. The original Affinity suite allowed users to buy licenses outright, ensuring access without subscription pressures.

With the rise of alternatives like Pixelmator—acquired by Apple in the same year—Affinity by Canva stands as a formidable competitor in the design landscape.

As the creative community adapts to these changes, how do you feel about the transition from Affinity’s original model? Share your thoughts in the comments!
