WhatsApp is introducing a new anti-spam feature aimed at combatting unsolicited messages. The popular messaging platform, owned by Meta, has announced that it will be testing a monthly cap on the number of messages users, especially businesses, can send without receiving a reply. This initiative comes in response to growing concerns regarding spam and unwanted communications.

According to TechCrunch, the trial involves setting a limit on message volume that only applies to accounts known for sending high amounts of messages. Both individuals and businesses will have their unread messages counted toward this cap—notably including messages sent multiple times to the same recipient. However, should the recipient reply, those messages will be exempt from the total count.

WhatsApp reassures average users that they are unlikely to reach the set limit, as polite messaging etiquette discourages continued communication after receiving no response. This feature is particularly tailored for businesses and spammers, enabling the platform to create a more user-friendly environment.

In recent months, WhatsApp has rolled out several measures to tackle its spam problem. Earlier this year, the app introduced the option for users to unsubscribe from marketing messages from businesses and began notifying users when unfamiliar contacts add them to group chats. As of the first half of 2025, WhatsApp has banned over 6.8 million accounts linked to scam operations.
