In a significant move for the music industry, Warner Music Group (WMG) has dropped its lawsuit against AI music platform Suno, reaching a groundbreaking licensing agreement. This comes on the heels of a similar partnership with Udio, wherein WMG accused various record labels of “massive” copyright infringement involving AI-generated music.

As part of the new licensing agreement, WMG assures that artists and songwriters will maintain complete control over how their names, images, likenesses, and compositions are utilized in AI-generated music. This shift towards an opt-in model, mirroring the Udio deal, reinforces the necessity of ensuring artists’ rights in the evolving digital landscape.

WMG CEO Robert Kyncl emphasized that “AI becomes pro-artist when it adheres to our principles,” pointing to the importance of licensed models that respect the value of music both on and off the platform.

Suno is set to make significant adjustments to its technology to align with this partnership, launching advanced licensed models by 2026. The changes will include limitations on music downloads, with only subscribers able to download tracks, while free-tier users will be restricted to streaming and sharing.

Interestingly, Suno is also acquiring WMG’s concert discovery platform, Songkick, aiming to enhance connections between artists and their fans. With this acquisition, the integration of concert discovery tools could lead Suno to explore more innovative social features in the future.

Previously, Suno faced scrutiny for using a wide array of online music to train its AI model, raising questions about copyright infringement. However, the new licensing agreements signal a strategic pivot for WMG, as they seek similar arrangements with platforms like YouTube.
