Snap is Bringing Shopping Features to Its AR Glasses

Snap Inc. is taking significant steps towards revolutionizing augmented reality with the upcoming launch of its consumer-ready AR glasses, called Specs. Set to debut next year, these innovative glasses promise to integrate shopping features directly into the AR experience, enhancing the way users interact with both digital and physical products.

During the recent Lens Fest event, Snap’s CTO Bobby Murphy announced that Specs would enable users to purchase items directly from their eyewear. This would be made possible through a new tool called Commerce Kit, which allows selected developers to accept payments inside AR lenses for digital goods and premium features. This move not only adds a retail dimension to Snap’s AR platform but also aims to open new revenue streams for developers involved in AR content creation.

Currently, Snap offers a Lens Creator rewards program that allows creators to monetize AR effects. With the new shopping capabilities, the company is strategically focusing on designer monetization and sustainable business models for external developers. While the success of this initiative remains uncertain, Snap is preparing to enhance the consumer AR experience beyond just entertainment.

Moreover, Snap has already rolled out impressive AR features, including a standalone experience for viewing Spotlight videos and a more powerful web browser, alongside a real-time translation lens. Collaborations with brands like Tripadvisor for AR lenses are also in the pipeline, promising to elevate users’ interactions with real-world establishments.

Snap’s ambition for Specs highlights a commitment to developing a robust AR ecosystem. As the company prepares for the launch, it envisions Specs as a transformative tool for various sectors, from educational environments to design studios, thereby creating opportunities for developers.
