Signal Extends Backup Feature to iOS Users

In a digital age where data recovery is becoming increasingly crucial, Signal has made a significant enhancement for iPhone users by introducing secure backup features. Following its successful launch for Android users in early September, Signal now extends its offerings to iOS devices, allowing users to safeguard their data effectively.

The announcement was shared on X and referenced a previous blog post detailing the Android version, providing users with comprehensive information about the new feature. Signal’s secure backups are designed to be an opt-in feature, ensuring users have control over their data recovery choices. This decision allows the company to test its functionality on a smaller scale before a broader rollout to iOS and desktop platforms.

These end-to-end encrypted backups provide a seamless way for users to store their messages and media for free for up to 45 days. For those who wish to retain older media, a modest fee of $2 per month will apply, marking Signal’s first venture into paid offerings. The company emphasizes that this charge is essential for managing the significant costs associated with data storage and transfer, particularly as a nonprofit that prioritizes user privacy over monetization strategies used by other tech companies.

For those opting into this feature, backups will occur daily, utilizing a unique 64-character recovery key stored solely on the user’s device. This ensures that access to the backup is exclusive and secure, with Signal unable to retrieve it.

With this update, Signal reinforces its commitment to privacy and user data security, providing iPhone users with a reliable way to protect their communications. As more users seek secure messaging solutions, the introduction of this backup feature could significantly enhance Signal’s standing in the market.
