Now You Can Use ChatGPT Voice Without Leaving Your Chat

OpenAI has announced that it’s changing how ChatGPT works with Voice mode on both the web and within its app. This update allows users to interact with ChatGPT Voice directly within their ongoing conversations. Users can now see a transcript of their chat alongside visuals that enhance the experience, making it easier to follow along.

Starting a voice chat is simple: just tap or click the “waveform” icon next to ChatGPT’s text field. Unlike the previous orb-filled interface, voice chats now occur inline with your current discussion. In a demo, ChatGPT displayed a transcript, suggesting popular bakeries and showing images of pastries, which adds a rich visual layer to the voice interactions.

This integration of visuals and voice responses is a significant step in enhancing the multimodal capabilities of ChatGPT. Users can already prompt ChatGPT with voice, and now, detailed voice responses make conversations even more engaging. Although competing platforms like Google’s Gemini Live have been exploring expressive live interactions, this feature enriches user experience without being overly complex.

If users prefer the original Voice interface, switching back is easy: just enable the “Separate mode” option in ChatGPT’s settings. This update reinforces the shift towards a more interactive and informative way to communicate with AI.
