Meta is Shutting Down Its Desktop Messenger App

Meta has recently announced the shutdown of its Messenger app for both macOS and Windows, directing users to access Messenger via web platforms. In an email to Engadget, the tech giant confirmed that the app will cease operations on December 15. After this date, users will have to rely on the Facebook app on Windows or access Messenger through its official website for their chat needs.

While Meta has not provided a detailed explanation for discontinuing its desktop Messenger apps, users will receive notifications about the impending shutdown, and access to the app will be blocked post-December 15. To ensure that conversations are preserved, users are advised to activate secure storage and set a pin code for their accounts. Following these steps is essential:

  1. Click on the gear icon above your profile picture.
  2. Select Privacy & Safety, then proceed to End-to-end encrypted chats.
  3. Choose Message storage and ensure the Turn on secure storage option is enabled.

Meta’s decision echoes its earlier move in 2014 when Messenger was separated from Facebook to create a more streamlined messaging experience. The company had previously attempted to unify Messenger with Instagram Direct Messaging but retreated from that plan this year. This shift away from desktop apps likely stems from user preferences, with most choosing the mobile app or web interface for their messaging needs.

As Meta makes this transition, it’s evident that the future of messaging may be increasingly mobile-focused. What are your thoughts on this change? Share your comments below!
