Facebook Rolls Out New Tools for Creators to Track Accounts Stealing Their Content

Creators on Facebook and Instagram have long expressed frustration over unauthorized accounts reposting their videos without permission. In response, Meta has launched a new content protection tool that allows creators to effectively track instances where their videos are reposted by others.

This tool, dubbed “content protection,” is designed to automatically detect when a creator’s original reel is shared, whether in full or partially, across Facebook and Instagram platforms. By enrolling in the feature, creators will have visibility into which accounts are sharing their work and a range of options for managing these reposts.

Actions available to creators include marking the repost with attribution, which allows them to label the content with a note indicating its original source. They will also be able to monitor views and engagement analytics. Moreover, creators can choose to block the clip entirely, restricting access for everyone, or they can release the video, removing it from their dashboard to limit unwanted tracking.

Additionally, the dashboard provides insights that help creators make informed decisions on how to address unauthorized usage. For instance, they can check if the infringing video is monetized. These insights could influence whether to track, block, or release the video based on its visibility and potential reach.

Previously, Meta offered certain functionalities through its rights manager platform, but by integrating these features directly within the Facebook app, they become accessible to a wider audience. Initially, content protection will be available to creators who meet specific integrity and originality standards within Facebook’s monetization program.

Meta is rolling out content protection now, with potential applicants encouraged to seek access directly through the platform. With such tools, creators can endeavor to safeguard their work, fostering a fairer environment on social media.
