Title: Meta Will Warn WhatsApp and Messenger Users Against Scams
Meta is rolling out new tools to help protect users on WhatsApp and Messenger from scams. The company has reported that it has “detected and disrupted” nearly 8 million accounts linked to scammers in regions like Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, the UAE, and the Philippines since early 2025. In addition, Meta has taken action against over 21,000 Facebook pages posing as legitimate customer support services. Despite these efforts, many scams continue to affect particularly vulnerable populations, including the elderly, who may not recognize the latest tactics employed by scammers.
To combat this, WhatsApp will now alert users if they try to share their screen with someone not listed in their contacts during a video call. Scammers often prompt their targets to share screens as a means to access sensitive information, ranging from personal details to banking information. The new warning urges users to only share screens with trusted contacts.
Furthermore, Messenger is testing advanced scam detection tools. Users receiving suspicious messages will see a warning, allowing them to forward messages to Meta for AI review. If deemed a potential scam, the AI will provide a list of common scam indicators. It also reminds users to avoid sending money via wire transfers or gift cards, common techniques employed by fraudsters. Users will be allowed to report and block suspicious accounts directly from the warning message.
Meta has not announced a specific rollout date for these tools in Messenger. However, users are encouraged to enable passkeys for quick identity verification and to conduct a Security Checkup on their accounts.
As these efforts aim to create a safer online environment, users are urged to stay vigilant and share their experiences. Have you encountered any scams on Messenger or WhatsApp? Share your thoughts in the comments!
