Discord Gives Parents More Insight into Their Teens’ Activity Through Family Center
Discord is enhancing its Family Center feature, aiming to equip parents with better insights into their teenagers’ activity on the platform. This update is designed to strike a balance between teen privacy and parental oversight, reflecting Discord’s commitment to user safety amidst growing scrutiny over young users.
Previously, parents could access an overview of their teens’ Discord activity. With the latest updates, they can now track all purchases made in the past week, the total time spent in voice and video calls, and the top five users and servers their teens interacted with. This level of transparency is intended to foster dialogue between parents and teens about online experiences.
Teens will also be able to notify their guardians when they report another user or inappropriate content, allowing for meaningful conversations around behavior on the platform. Furthermore, Discord is introducing guardian-managed settings that empower parents to control who can send direct messages to their children and enable sensitive content filters, ultimately enhancing safety.
As Discord faces challenges related to young user safety, including lawsuits and potential bans in Australia for users under 16, these updates come at a crucial time. Earlier this year, New Jersey’s attorney general even sued Discord for allegedly misleading parents regarding safety protocols.
To utilize the Family Center, both parents and teens must link their accounts via User Settings in the Discord app, ensuring that families can navigate the platform together.
As these updates roll out, how do you feel about parental oversight in online spaces? Let us know in the comments!
