Character.AI to Ban Teens from Talking to Its Chatbots

Character.AI has announced a ban on teenagers interacting with its chatbots, responding to growing concerns about the safety of younger users. In a recent statement, the company confirmed that, starting November 25, users under 18 will no longer be able to engage in open-ended conversations with its AI platforms.

This decision reflects the mounting pressure on AI companies to enhance their protective measures for younger audiences. Prior to the ban, Character.AI is implementing a temporary experience for users under 18, encouraging them to use chatbots creatively, such as for video or stream creation, rather than seeking companionship. Initially, under-18 users will be limited to a two-hour daily interaction with bots—a timeframe that will decrease as the effective date approaches.

In its efforts to improve safety, Character.AI is introducing an age assurance tool designed to ensure users are matched with age-appropriate experiences. Furthermore, the company has launched an “AI Safety Lab” aimed at collaborating with other industry stakeholders to enhance AI safety protocols.

Regulators and concerned parents have expressed unease about the potential risks associated with teenage use of AI chatbots. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is initiating inquiries into companies offering AI companionship, with Character.AI among those involved.

Character.AI’s recent actions also come amid scrutiny from officials like Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who criticized some chatbots for falsely presenting themselves as therapeutic tools. In light of these controversies, the CEO of Character.AI has stated that the company is shifting its focus from AI companionship to creating a “role-playing platform” that prioritizes creativity.

As concerns mount about the implications of AI on youth, the decision by Character.AI could set a precedent for other companies in the space. What are your thoughts on this move? Share your comments below!
